Why WordPress?

You might be wondering why you should sell digital products on WordPress?

After all, there are plenty of other platforms that you could use. But here are a few reasons why selling digital products on WordPress is a good idea:

WordPress is easy to use.

If you’re not familiar with coding or don’t have time to learn, WordPress is an excellent platform because it’s easy to use. You can create a website in minutes, and adding products is easy.

WordPress is SEO-friendly.

WordPress websites are search engine optimized by default, which means your products will get more exposure online. This is important because most buyers now search for products online before purchasing.

WordPress is the largest CMS on the internet.

According to the Search Engine Journal, 39.5% of all websites now use WordPress! Your products will have better exposure because more people are online and more potential buyers.

Now that we’ve covered why selling digital products on WordPress is a good idea, let’s start with the product creation process.

Creating a website to sell digital products using WordPress.

Let’s go over the steps needed to get your website up and running, use WordPress as the CMS, and integrate Woocommerce for an online store.

Woocomerce is a plugin used to add an online store to your WordPress site.

It’s an easy and flexible way to sell products and services from your WordPress website or blog.

Step #1. Buy a domain and hosting package.

Buying a domain name and host using bluehost

The first step is getting your domain name and hosting package. You can purchase it from any domains providers, but I recommend BlueHost.

They offer a domain name at a very competitive price of $12 a year; they also provide excellent customer service should you need help setting things up.

Once you have purchased your new site’s domain name, the next step is to choose a hosting provider. There are many to choose from, but I recommend sticking to the same company where your domain is registered.

Set up your hosting account. You will receive an email with your login information for the cPanel.

Choose a great web host for your website. If you are unsure of what to choose or how to choose, check out this article for advice.

Step #2. Install WordPress.

If you aren’t sure, wordPress is already installed on your hosting account. If it isn’t, you will need to discuss that with your hosting company or hosting reseller.

Or you can install it by:

  1. Log in to the cPanel of your hosting account.
  2. Select ‘WordPress Auto-Installer’ under the ‘Software / Services’ section.
  3. Fill in the form with your WordPress Site URL, admin username, and password.
  4. Select a strong password, as this is your Admin Password for your site! If you selected a weak password, you would need to reset it once the installation is complete.
  5. Once installed, navigate to your site. You will need to go to YOURDOMAIN.com/wp-admin/ (replacing “YOURDOMIN” with your actual domain name).
  6. Enter the admin username and password you selected during installation, and enjoy your new WordPress website!

Step #3. Install WooCommerce.

WooCommerce provides a powerful and flexible eCommerce framework with deep CMS integration and a wide range of features: Shipping Options, Payment Gateway, Real-Time Shipping Rates, Coupon Functionality, Tax Calculations, Discount/Sale Functionality, and more.

  5. Once you click install, Woocommerce will be installed on your site.

Step #4. Set up products in WordPress.

  1. After installing Woocommerce, go to the ‘Woocommerce’ menu at the top left.
  2. Click on ‘Products.’
  3. On the left side, click on ‘Add Product.’
  4. Enter your product info and price. You can upload an image here too!
  5. Fill in your product information. Set a ‘Title’ for what you are selling, the ‘Description,’ choose if it is taxable or not, and tag it with keywords so people can find your products easier!
  6. You can also fill in the shipping settings directly from this page by adding a shipping class.

Step #5. Configure taxes and shipping.

  1. After adding your products, go to the ‘Woocommerce’ menu at the top left.
  2. Click on ‘Taxes.’
  3. You can add tax rates here for different countries and set a default rate.
  4. This will automatically be reflected across all of your products!
  5. You can also configure a shipping price if you have a shipping class. The price will show up as an option during the checkout process.

Step #6. Create product categories.

  1. Go to the ‘Woocommerce’ menu at the top left.
  2. Click on ‘Categories.’
  3. You can add a custom name for your category in the ‘Name’ section, and in the ‘Parent’ dropdown, choose if it is a top-level or a sub-category.
  4. In this example, we have created a few categories.
  5. You can also add products to these categories by clicking ‘Add Product’ and selecting the appropriate category.

What to consider when creating your WordPress website.

Before you start selling digital products on WordPress, there are a few things you need to consider, namely:

Your product should be downloadable.

If you’re selling an eBook, the person will download it directly from your site. If you’re selling a video course or some other type of digital content, they need to provide their email address and password so that WordPress can “unlock” the content for them.

Work backwards from your desired price.

Figure out how much money you’d like to earn per sale, and then work backwards until you’ve determined your product’s cost. The give away an eBook for $5? Then each person who buys it will need to make at least $4 per sale.

Add a “Buy Now” button to product pages.

Your product should have a “Buy Now” button that allows your visitors to purchase it.

The Buy Now button will redirect your buyer to the checkout page on Paypal or their favourite secure payment processor, which is where they can enter their info and pay for the product.

Congratulations! You now have a digital product up and running on your website.

How to set up your sales page.

Now that you have everything ready to sell, it’s time to create your sales page. A good sales page will do several things:

1. Sell the benefits of your product.

This is probably the most crucial part of a sales page. People are buying your product for a reason, so tell them exactly why they need this specific solution for their problem.

2. Sell the features of your product.

Your product has many great features that will provide value to the reader, and it’s important to let them know what you’re offering in detail.

Tell them why your product is different from any other and how it works precisely. Also, don’t forget to highlight your previous experience and accolades.

3. Indicate the price of your product

State clearly what you’re selling and how much it costs. If there are any limited-time discounts or special offers, communicate that.

4. Sell the benefits of buying from you.

Make it clear why they should buy from you instead of a competitor! Explain why your product is unique and go above and beyond where you think another competitor might.

Also, talk about how fast or friendly your customer service is to increase the value of buying from you!

5. Sell the risks of not buying your product.

It’s the last thing you want to communicate on your sales page, but often people will still think about what could happen if they don’t buy your product. They must know that this could happen, so you’ll be top of mind when they decide to purchase!

6. Have a Call to Action

Your sales page needs a call to action so people know what to do next! Tell them they can buy now, request a free trial, or sign up for your newsletter with one click of their mouse. Now they won’t be left wondering how they can get started or what’s next!

7. Offer an irresistible guarantee.

Make it very clear that your customer’s satisfaction is guaranteed! Give a specific time frame and let them know they’ll get a full refund if they change their mind. This will help remove any fear people may have about purchasing from you.

8. Show social proof of your product.

You might have testimonials from past customers if you’ve been in business for a while. If so, put these on your sales page too! This will reassure people that your product is the real deal and excellent customer service.

9. Have reassurance of your brand

This is another thing you might not include since many of us are new to selling digital products. However, if you have an established brand, people will be more likely to trust you if they see your name attached to the sales page.

10. Updates on your product

If you’re launching new or updating your product, now is the perfect time to let them know! This will incentivize people to buy your current version while you’re still in the early stages since updates will cost more when you launch.

11. Sell expert endorsements

If you know any experts in your industry, ask if they’d be willing to endorse your product! This will inform potential customers that someone else trusts what you offer and makes them more likely to do it.

12. Sell exclusivity of your product

If you’re selling a product that is only available for a limited time, say so! People will be more likely to buy now before it’s gone, and you’ll get early adopters excited about being one of the first to use what you have to offer.

How to market digital products on WordPress?

Let’s take a look at how to market digital products on WordPress.

#1. Find Marketing Partners.

When you’re looking for marketing partners, it’s important to find businesses that are a good fit for your product. You want to partner with companies that share your values and have a similar customer base.

#2. Reach Out to Marketing Partners.

Once you’ve found some potential marketing partners, it’s time to reach out! Here are two great examples of how to reach out to companies:

  • Use your email list or social media followers to spread the word about your product. How do you get access to their lists? Find businesses with apps that let people subscribe to their email lists or follow them on social media.
  • Reach out to companies via cold email if you have an extensive list. This might seem intimidating at first, but it’s pretty simple once you get started!.

#3. Cross-Promote with Other Products.

If you’re selling a digital product and don’t have a physical product or physical service to offer, you can still reach out to other businesses that do!

For example, if you’re selling an ebook about growing your vegetables, find another business that sells gardening supplies and see if they’ll cross-promote with you.

You may also want to reach out to businesses that share your values and audience.

#4. Run a Prize Campaign aka Give away.

Prize campaigns are a great way to boost sales and get more emails into your funnel!

One of the most successful prize campaigns is the Kindle Giveaway, where authors give away free copies of their ebooks on Amazon.

#5. Share What You’re Selling With Friends, Family, and Followers.

If you have a blog or social account, share what you’re selling with your friends and followers.

Don’t spam people! But if someone asks you about the product or service (or if it’s something they might be interested in), feel free to let them know about it.

#6. Use Hashtags to Attract Attention.

Hashtags are a great way to draw attention from the right people at the right time. Include one in your post or add it to your product title if you’re sharing on social media.

#7. Use Your Existing Customer Base.

Your existing customers have already bought from you once, so chances are they’ll be more willing to purchase from you a second or third time.

You can also use your existing list of customers for marketing by cross-promoting with them, offering them a discount on your new product, and even running a prize campaign just for them!

#8. Use Your Existing Authority.

If you have an authority site or social media account, you can leverage that to sell your product. For example, if you have a blog with lots of dedicated followers, post an ad for your new product on your site.

#9. Give Away Some of Your Product as a Means of Earning Trust.

You can also give away a portion of your product for free by sharing the first chapter or sending out an email blast to get people hooked. This allows potential buyers to try before they buy, which will increase sales over time.

#10. Offer Your Product in Multiple Forms.

If someone is unsure about buying your product, they might be more willing to give them different ways to do it.

For example, think of ways people with limited funds could buy what you’re selling (like paying in instalments or using a coupon code).

#11. Pitch Your Product While You Have People’s Attention.

If you want to make sure that the people you’re pitching to are listening, try and catch them while they’re watching something else. Here are some examples of how to pitch your product around other things:

  • Post an ad after a blog post closely related to what you’re selling.
  • Send out an email at the end of your blog post checklist.
  • Share an ad with your social media followers or on another business’s site while they’re watching a video.
  • Run a prize campaign to get people onto your email list! You can use this list later to market.

#12. Create an Email List.

Creating an email list is incredibly important if you’re selling a digital product. You can use this list to market again and again.

Be sure to include links back to your store or sales page in all of your emails so that customers know where they can buy. But also, don’t spam your readers! Instead, send them helpful information about your product, sales, coupons, etc.

#13. Use a Landing Page for Your Product Sales.

A landing page is a great way to capture leads and turn them into customers. You can use it when running any promotion or sale, but its primary purpose is around your product launch.

It allows you to track visitors and leads to knowing whether your launch is going well and where it needs improvement.

#14. Create a Product Launch Sequence.

If you want to see an increase in sales, try preselling your product by running a product launch sequence!

Start sending out emails before your product goes live with compelling reasons to buy, links to your sales page, and even bonuses you’re offering.

#15. Use Exclusivity as a Marketing Tool.

Adding an element of exclusivity can be another way to boost sales. You could run a limited-time sale, offer exclusive bonuses for early buyers, or make sure that people who subscribe before the product get priority over those who don’t.

Tips for increasing sales of your digital product.

Increase your conversions by giving away a freebie

Don’t we all like to get something for free? You don’t want to buy and then regret it, and then there is an element of risk when we make purchases online; we never know what we’re going to get after we’ve paid for it.

Offer a bonus for buying your product.

Offer something that can only be accessed by buying your digital product. This will encourage more people to purchase the product, and you’ll have a higher conversion rate.

Use images in your products.

Ensure you abide by all copyright rules when using images in your digital product. Using images in your digital product without the correct copyright is illegal. If you get caught, then at best, it will be taken down, but at worst, you might end up having to pay a fine.

Master the basics of copywriting.

Use a compelling title and write an engaging sales paragraph for your digital product. The title should grab the reader’s attention, and the sales paragraph should be engaging and honest about the benefits of buying your product.

Use a powerful intro in your digital product.

You can use an introduction to give context to your product or tell people what’s in it for them if they buy the product.

Add bonuses.

You’re giving people who purchase extra value for their money by adding bonuses. You should try to offer relevant bonuses if possible so that people will want to buy the product because of the bonuses you offer.

Research how other digital products are priced and use similar pricing

Use similar pricing as competitors but don’t be afraid to charge more than they do. If you can justify charging more on your sales page, then charge more.

People respond to a higher price as they see that as a sign of quality, and if there is not much difference between your product and competitors, people will go with the lower-priced option.

Have testimonials from customers who have purchased your product.

It helps establish credibility and gives people an idea of the quality they can expect from your digital product.

Use a high-quality sales page.

Your sales letter should be well written, have good design and formatting, and have all the relevant features you would expect from a professionally finished sales letter.

Troubleshooting tips if things don’t go as planned with your WordPress store.

  •  Check your settings: ensure that you have the necessary plugins installed and that your website is configured to accept payments.
  •  Confirm that your shopping cart is working correctly: test different payment methods and ensure that customers can complete their transactions.
  •  Verify your Webhosting: make sure that your website is up and running without errors or delays.
  •  Update your WordPress theme and plugins: sometimes, old software versions can cause conflicts with new updates, so it’s essential to keep everything up-to-date.
  •  Review your marketing strategy: if sales are slow, take a look at what you’re doing wrong and make changes accordingly.
  •  Check for viruses or malware on your website: a simple way to do this is by copying and pasting the URL into Wot.com. If it’s flagged, you may need an antivirus installed on your computer or server.
  •  If you’re still having issues after trying everything listed above, contact your bank to see what payment options are available.
